I love nests!

There’s something about nests that really intrigues me…the innate ability of birds to build them…the painstakingly long process of creating this unique home. My nest and “branch” are made of amber glass.

Here’s another nest created with clear glass and embellished with found feathers.

 

Iridescent Sea

This plate is a layer of light aqua and iridescent clear glass. Then it was slumped in a mold with raised sea stars and other sea life. This plate took 2nd place in the 2022 Trail’s End Art Association Judged Show in Gearhart, Oregon.

I've enjoyed using silver foil (although its tricky to work with!) to add sparkle. I love the way the foil reacts to the red opaque glass, leaving a black ring around each foil shape.

My series of sea star plates and bowls feature a bas relief of the star, created by cutting the shape out of fiber paper and firing the glass over the paper.

It's hard to see in this photo, but there are pieces of very thin white glass fused into the clear glass strips of this plate. The gold in the middle is iridized glass.

These purple, black and gray plates feature coordinated colors of stripes pre-made in what we call a "part sheet." It's designed, assembled and fired first and then cut up to use in other projects.

Green and gold just seem to go together, don't they? The special production Bullseye glass with green color splash is complemented by gold iridized glass and transparent green.

I feel like King Midas when I use this Bullseye Silver to Gold glass, which turns silver foil into gold.

I've always been fascinated by a bird's ability and knowledge of how to build a sturdy, complex, warm home in which to hatch their offspring. For my nests, I heated "stringer" glass with a blow torch so I could bend it to create the image of sticks

For my nests, I heated "stringer" glass with a blow torch so I could bend it to create the image of sticks and organic material. I also added special paint and crumbled glass (called frit).

ABOUT

I’ve been making original handmade glass since the early 1990s. I do a lot of functional glass but also love working on showcase pieces and jewelry collections.

Most of my experience comes from classes at Bullseye Glass and lots of practice and experimentation on my own.

I’ve been featured in a number of shows, galleries and gift shops throughout the Portland area and along the north coast. Find my glass at Fairweather House and Gallery in Seaside and Trail's End Art Association in Gearhart.

I split my time between the beach (Seaside, Oregon) and the desert (La Quinta, California), after spending most of my life in the Portland area. When not in the studio, I love listening to music, reading books, spending time with family and friends, bicycling, swimming and exploring the many cultural activities the northwest has to offer!
